Advanced Standing Guide · 2027 Edition
Kentucky MSW Advanced Standing Tracks
For BSW holders: the shortened MSW tracks that cut the requirement to 30–33 credits instead of 60, roughly halving tuition. Every Kentucky program's track, credit load, and eligibility rules — verified against university sources.
What advanced standing is
A shortened MSW track for holders of a BSW from a CSWE-accredited program. Kentucky advanced standing tracks run 30–33 credits versus 60 for traditional tracks — roughly halving the tuition bill at the same per-credit rate.
Advanced standing exists because CSWE-accredited BSW programs already cover the MSW’s foundation curriculum: generalist practice, human behavior, policy, research, and the first field placement. The graduate program waives that foundation content and starts you at the advanced concentration year.
Eligibility has two gates: the BSW must come from a CSWE-accredited program, and it must be recent — most Kentucky programs require it within the last five years, though rules vary. Miss the recency cutoff and you enter the traditional track regardless of your degree.
Kentucky advanced standing tracks, compared
Credit requirements verified against university catalogs and bulletins. Where sources conflict, both figures are shown — confirm the current number directly with the program.
| University | Advanced standing credits | Traditional credits |
|---|---|---|
| University of Kentucky | 30 | 60 |
| University of Louisville | 30 | 60 |
| Western Kentucky University | 33 | 60 |
| Northern Kentucky University | 30 | 60 |
| Campbellsville University | 30 | 60 |
| Brescia University | 30 | 60 |
| Eastern Kentucky University | 30 | 48–62 (catalog range) |
| University of Pikeville | 30 | 60 |
| Spalding University | 31 | Not confirmed in current primary sources |
| Reading the table: the credit gap is the savings gap. At a constant per-credit rate, a 36-credit track costs about 63% of a 57-credit track. Multiply the program’s published rate by each credit total to see your number. | ||
Eligibility rules to confirm
Every program sets its own advanced standing rules. Before you count on the shortened track, get these three answers in writing:
| Checkpoint | What to ask |
|---|---|
| BSW recency | How many years back does the program accept the BSW? (UK: within 7 years; Campbellsville: BSWs older than 7 years enter the 60-hour track.) |
| GPA threshold | Is there a minimum undergraduate GPA for advanced standing? (UK: 3.0 cumulative, 3.5 in social work coursework.) |
| Bridge requirements | Any summer bridge course or orientation before the track starts? Ask each program directly. |
| Application timing | Does advanced standing have a separate deadline or start term? (Campbellsville offers August, January, and May entry.) |
| Verdict: recency is the most common disqualifier. A BSW earned six or seven years ago may miss a five-year cutoff — ask early, not after you apply. | |
Frequently asked questions
How much does advanced standing save?
Roughly half the tuition bill. Calculated examples from this census: Kentucky saves $23,700 (60→30 credits at $790/credit); Western Kentucky saves $16,389 (60→33 at $607); Campbellsville saves $19,200 (60→30 at $640) — plus a year less of foregone earnings and living costs.
Can I do advanced standing online?
Yes — UK, Campbellsville, EKU, Pikeville, Brescia, NKU, WKU, and Louisville all confirm online options with advanced standing tracks. Field education is completed in person regardless of format.
What if my BSW is too old for advanced standing?
You enter the traditional track. UK requires the BSW within the past seven years; Campbellsville routes BSWs older than seven years into the 60-hour program. Confirm each program's current recency rule in writing.
Is advanced standing less rigorous?
No. It covers the same advanced concentration curriculum and field hours as the traditional track’s second year — it waives only the foundation content your accredited BSW already covered.
